We’re Hiring a Project Officer

  • Position: Project Officer (Part-time, 24 hours a week)   
  • Reporting to: Executive Director   

Lamu Environment Foundation (LEF) is a Kenyan registered Company limited by guarantee established in 2021. LEF raises funds from individuals, businesses and grantmakers to support grassroots environmental and conservation projects across Lamu County, Kenya. The funds raised are used to support and advance various community-led environmental conservation projects in the following thematic areas: 

  • Solid Waste Management  
  • Land Regeneration and Restoration 
  • Marine Conservation 
  • Mangrove Conservation   

All our projects have an aspect of awareness raising and education and/or creating additional livelihoods linked to the sustainable management of ecosystems. 

LEF has recently conducted an impact assessment across our grantee portfolio and identified areas for improvement. We are seeking a project officer to be responsible for regular visits, monitoring and immediate oversight of grantee activities. This role is key in helping LEF monitor our environmental projects in Lamu and consistently improve the quality, scale, and impact of the work we fund. 

Key responsibilities:  

  • All aspects of the grant making process (exploring idea with proponent, overseeing the application process, review, monitoring impact); 
  • Visiting projects regularly and reporting on visits with short notes, photographs and other evidence; 
  • Reviewing project reporting with finance officer to jointly advise the Executive Director of next steps; 
  • Contributing to digital marketing communications with content such as pictures and videos (website, email newsletter, social media, impact reports) from the projects LEF funds, events and other relevant material; 
  • Attend stakeholder meetings and environmental events representing LEF; 

Skills required:  

  • Good written and spoken English;
  • An understanding of the local and cultural context and good ability to read social dynamics; 
  • Minimum 2-years of experience in working in non-profits, ideally working on environmentally focused activities; 
  • Excellent organisational skills with rigorous attention to detail;
  • Self-motivated and able to work well remotely;
  • Comfortable with using (or learning to use) MS Office suite, Canva, WordPress, Mailchimp, Salesforce, and social media platforms; 
  • Sharp time management skills and commitment to deadlines; 
  • Strong ethics, honesty, ability to maintain an independent oversight role with grantees and the ability to manage confidential data; 
  • Confident working remotely as part of a small team; 
  • Happy to travel regularly within Lamu County and beyond if required to do so; 
  • Legally able to work in Kenya.
